From My Kitchen: Swiss Steak

If you’re anything like me, then you’re forever looking for a new recipe. I have a bunch of recipes on hand, that I will cook again and again, but I do cook almost every day, so sometimes you just want to try something new. Whenever I have a free moment, I browse the internet to find new recipes, or at least some that are new to me. I came across this one, and being that my brother lives in Switzerland, it immediately caught my eye. I’m not sure if this is actually a Swiss recipe, but honestly, it was delicious, different and fairly easy to prepare. Not to mention that it was perfect for this cold weather. It’s great as a family meal during the week!

What you’ll need:

  • 2 pounds lean chuck steak
  • 4 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 medium onions, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • salt and black pepper
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbsp dried oregano
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. If the steaks are thick, pound them with a mallet to a thickness of 1/2 inch.

Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat. Add onions and sauté for about 5 minutes. Add garlic and sauté for another minute. Remove from pot and set aside.

Season the steaks with salt and pepper, then dredge in flour. Add 2 more tbsp of the oil to the Dutch oven, then sear the steaks until they are golden brown.

In a medium bowl, mix together tomatoes, water, oregano, and Worcestershire sauce, then season with salt and pepper. Pour over the seared steaks. Spoon the onion mixture on top. Cover the pot and bake for 2 1/2 hours in the oven. Serve with potatoes of your choice.

Bon Appétit!
