The BBQ Blog

If you love food and flavor, then there’s a good chance you love Barbecue. I sure do. People down south have easy access to it, but in a big city like New York, it’s not that hard to come by either. While researching all our amazing BBQ restaurants, I realized that sooooo many of them are in Brooklyn! As I will tackle the spots in that great borough soon, for now I’m reporting back to you about some great BBQ restaurants I found here in Manhattan!

Blue Smoke

This large, busy eatery in the Flatiron district is a ton of fun. Besides the rustic restaurant with the snazzy red seats, there is a Jazz Club on the lower level. Drinks are cool and yummy, including a long list of Whiskeys, so: fun is inevitable. Chef and pit master Jean Paul Bourgeois created a menu with dry-rubbed meats, and house made BBQ sauces. This soulful lineup is packed with flavor, and you can taste tradition and expertise in every bite.

Warm Barbecue Potato Chips with a Blue Cheese Bacon Dip will get you ready for this culinary experience. Dry Rubbed Smoked Chicken, 5 Pepper Beef Brisket, and Chopped Pork Shouder are dishes you need to try! From the long list of sides, the Mac & Cheese, Collard Greens and Hush Puppies were on my lineup that evening. I’d like to say I tried the desserts, but I was full to the brim. However, if the main course was any indication of the tastiness of the desserts, then good Lord, go for it! Besides good food, this place is an experience!

Dinosaur BBQ

This place has been around for a long time, and its longevity speaks for itself. It has now spread out to numerous locations in the Tri-State area, but the original is located in Syracuse NY. For Mother’s Day my son took me to The Harlem location on 125th Street, because he knows what moves mom’s heart…

First order is ALWAYS Fried Green Tomatoes. They are just so delicious with that amazing house made Ranch Dressing! As a matter of fact, all their house made sauces are insanely good, and half the reason why this place rocks. Mild Honey BBQ wings are the appetizer, pit-smoked and blackened on the grill, you just can’t get enough. The main dishes come in all sorts of combos, which of course I love, being that I always want to try a little bit of everything. We had St. Louis Ribs, Pulled Pork, BBQ Brisket, and the Smoked Hot Link Sausage with sides of Creamed Corn, Mac & Cheese, Cajun Potato Salad, and BBQ Fried Rice. All the meats have that straight off the grill smoked flavor, it doesn’t even matter which one you pick, you will understand why this restaurant is alway packed!

Mighty Quinn’s Barbecue

If you want take-out or a quick bite on the way home, rather than a sit down dinner, then Mighty Quinn’s is the place to go, With a few locations all over the city, their menu is short, sweet and to the point. You order at the counter and grab a seat with your tray of goodies.

The menu items are classic: Pulled Pork, Brisket, Ribs and Chicken. A standout are the Brontosaurus Ribs: an oversized beef rib, juicy and delicious. I’ve tried a few items here, and they are all spot on, with the most delicious add-ons like pickled red onions, cucumbers and chiles. The Chicken Sandwiches are crispy and hot with sauces like Honey Chile. The sides here however steal the show! The Mac and Cheese is ridiculously good, Burnt End Baked Beans are a must, and if you don’t have the Sweet Potato Casserole with pecans and maple syrup, you will never forgive yourself. We do our thing here up north!

Hello there, fellow foodies! My name is Erica, I was born and raised in Germany, and moved to the US, New York City to be exact, in July of 1987. I don't always eat everything you see in my pictures, but you bet your buns, I do try everything. Last but not least, you should know that I am a huge Top Chef fan. I have never missed an episode of the Bravo TV show. I have at this point visited almost 20 restaurants run by Top Chef contestants, and I'm continuously impressed by their skill, drive and passion. So I will continue to seek them out, and I hope you join me in my journey!
