I know everyone loves cab legs. It seems like a fun meal to have, cracking those crab legs open, dipping them in butter, all while wearing a plastic bib, having fun with friends and family. However, and please forgive me, I personally will forgo any item on a menu whenever there is work involved for me personally. I’m a dine and go kind of person. I don’t want to have to work to get to the goods. So, while I absolutely love the taste of a good crab, crab cakes are more my speed. Living right on the Atlantic coast, there is plenty of good, fresh crab available in New York, and great crab cakes aren’t hard to find in the Big Apple. Here are some of my favorites!
Ocean Prime
Ocean Prime has many locations all over the US, and ours right here in the city is calling 52nd Street home, close to the corner of 6th Avenue. This is most likely my favorite, period. I love Ocean Prime altogether, I never ate anything here that wasn’t 100% delicious. Their crab cake is no exception. The Jumbo Lump Crab Cake here is served with Sweet & Sour Slaw and a Horseradish Mustard Aioli. It’s packed with top grade crab, and I could positively eat three of them. It is top notch.

The Boil
The Boil is located at 17 Waverly Place in the Village (besides two more locations in Brooklyn and New Jersey). This place is large with wooden booths, a huge bar, and seems like a fun place altogether. The Crab Cake here is super fresh, comes with or without fries, and a yummy dip. My only complaint is that I eat it too fast, because it’s so good.

Sea Fire Grill
The Sea Fire Grill is a classy spot on the Upper Eastside, right on 48th Street. Dimly lit and cozy, it seems like an escape from the hustle and bustle of Midtown. The Jumbo Lump Crab Cake is served with Red Pepper Coulis, Tartar Sauce, Frisee Salad, and the most delicious Celery Root Remoulade. Scrumptious.

Claw Daddy’s
There’s good dining on the Lower Eastside in all directions, and Claw Daddy’s on Orchard Street in no exception. This is another spacious spot with booths for seafood dining, it’s just really awesome. There aren’t any crab cakes per se, but the Crab Cake Fritters are prettty much the same, just in a smaller package. They come with a spicy Ranch dip, and they’re all that.

David Burke Tavern
David Burke Tavern is an upscale restaurant on the Upper East Side, owned by Chef David Burke, a chef well known around the country. The restaurant itself feels like a neighborhood spot, warm and welcoming. I absolutely had to try their crab cake, because it is served in a pretzel raft. How fun is that? it is served with Old Bay Tomato Jam and Chipotle Aioli and is so pretty and delicious. I wish there was a little more crab in it, but 10 points for the pretzel raft!
