What’s your favorite Donut?? There are so many options, especially these days. It is probably hard to choose just one, donuts are the ultimate treat. But for me it is pretty clear, crullers are on top of my list. Of course they are, because there is a tendency to make my life more difficult than it needs to be, crullers are the hardest to find here in the Big Apple. Growing up in Germany, the only donut I ever knew was a sugar donut with fruit filling, and we pretty much just ate them for New Year’s Eve. Moving to the US, and then starting to see all the varieties, was a pleasant surprise to me. But once I tried a cruller, it was a wrap for me. They are so light and fluffy with the perfect amount of glazed sugar, it was love at first bite. Now of course, hardly any bakery or donut shop carries them, so I went on a mission, and found five of the best, so you can spare yourself the footwork.
Daily Provisions
Daily Provisions has several locations in New York City, and besides donuts, they have some pretty yummy food. But their Maple Cruller is to die for! it’s outrageously delicious. So light and well baked, perfect Maple seasoning, go get one.
Butterfield Market
You can find a Butterfield Market on Lexington Avenue, or on Madison Avenue. This is a pretty high end, solid grocery store with all kinds of goodies, I love to pop in every once in a while. Their crullers? Top notch. I love the plain one here, just because it is absolutely perfect.
The Donut Pub
Are you really a Donut Pub, if you don’t have any crullers? Don’t worry, this one does. As a matter of fact, they have a few varieties. Here I love the Black and White Cruller, which is a marble-style cruller twist, that is a little more dense than your traditional one, it’s a little more “cakey”. And yet so delicious. A must-try.
Peter Pan
And then I had to travel to Brooklyn. Williamsburg and Greenpoint have so much good food, and it’s only a couple of subway stops from Manhattan. I’ve been to Peter Pan before, and they have some pretty good stuff here. Obviously, their chocolate cruller is no exception. Worth the subway ride!
Moe’s Doughs
Moe’s Doughs is just a few steps away from Peter Pan, and while you’re in the neighborhood, you should definitely stop by. Here a got the plain cruller (alongside some fresh bagels), and it was another trip that was well worth it. Fluffy and sugary, I loved their cruller.
