Philly Cheesesteaks in NYC

There is nothing like a Philly Cheesesteak! If you are in Philadelphia, that is. For me, Philly isn’t too far away, it’s just two hours on the Amtrak train, and for a New Yorker, that’s pretty standard to go to numerous places. But we don’t always have that extra time when the craving kicks in. They make Cheesesteaks here, but they usually don’t compare, and once you had one in Philadelphia, nothing compares. But then there’s me. I will find it. I research, I taste, I travel within our five boroughs, and I will find it. Here are the three cheeessteaks that I feel can hold their water to the ones from Philly.

Fedoroff’s Roast Pork LLC.

You’ll have to travel to Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and it’s so worth the trip (unless you live there, of course). Fedoroff’s makes a cheesesteak that can easily be served in Philadelphia, and nobody there would shrug a shoulder. Made with prime steak and onions and Cheese Whiz, this is without a doubt the one to make me feel the most like I was actually in Philly. Two thumbs up.

Danny & Coop’s

Ok. Well. Danny & Coop’s is partially owned by Bradley Cooper, so one should always try to go and catch a glimpse of this beautiful man. But then again, he’s never there, and we’ve been duped, but the sandwich ends up being so good, we forget all about Bradley. This place is partly owned by Danny DiGiampetro, a Philadelphia chef that owns a famous pizzeria, and who knows his way around a cheesesteak. Chopped steak with plenty of onions, topped off with Cooper Sharp American Cheese, this cheesesteak can more than hold its own in Philly, while gracing NYC.

Rocco’s

Rocco’s calls its home Long Island City, and it is literally in a food stand in the parking lot of a Home Depot. That’s right. Sounds shifty? Yes, maybe. But it’s really, really good. It’s made the traditional way with chopped steak, lots of onions and (in this case with peppers, unless you omit them, as I did). The cheese is American, it’s simple goodness, authentic and delicious.
